Latin American studies is part of “area studies”, which involves interdisciplinary research on a particular geographical area. Faculties and departments collaborate on specific research areas involving two or more disciplines. Collaboration between lecturers and a certain amount of integration of study programmes (BA, Master’s, doctorate) are required.
At the University of St. Gallen, the Centre for Latin American Studies assures coordination with and promotes openness towards other educational and research centres on Latin America around the world.
However, there is no Latin American pathway as such at any study level (BA through to doctorate). Several universities do offer courses in history and social sciences.
The various courses allow for a curriculum on Latin American countries and the issues affecting them.
There is also a graduate programme (ProDoc) on Latin America, which provides doctorate students with an institutional framework for their thematic and geographical studies on Latin America
