The African continent is changing rapidly and in the context of trying conditions. The manifold and complex challenges African societies face recommend an interdisciplinary approach. By engaging with this region you learn to appreciate to what degree our knowledge and knowledge systems have been shaped by Europe’s encounter with the African continent, and how area studies contribute to the development of the systematic disciplines. By way of a thematic approach you widen your competencies and learn to combine methods issued from various disciplines.
In Switzerland, the universities of Basel and Geneva offer study programs in African Studies. At both universities scholars specializing in Africa are organized in research networks. Other universities dispose of a great Africa-related expertise but do not offer area specific programs.
